Algemene Bank Nederland (ABN)
Dr. Andre Batenburg, chairman of the board of ABN from 1974-1985, was classified as a stylish, traditional banker with a strong interest in culture.
The headquarters of the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij, later the headquarters of ABN, opened in 1926. The building is now home of the Amsterdam City Archives. It was designed by architects Karel de Bazel and Dolf van Gendt.
In August 1979 the acquisition of LaSalle National Bank of Chicago was completed. This led to a significant expansion of the U.S. operations of ABN.
