Verenigde Spaarbank
In 1784, the Mennonite referend, Jan Nieuwenhuyzen founded "de Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen" in Edam. In 1817, the local departments of this organisation founded branches of Savings Banks. Portrait by Adriaan de Lelie.
Around 1900, the Savings banks in Rotterdam and Amsterdam, which were the main precursors of VSB, already had impressive office buildings. On the left, the Botersloot in Rotterdam circa 1904, and on the right, the Singel in Amsterdam circa 1900.
