Nowadays almost everything is digital – including at ABN AMRO. Fewer and fewer clients visit their local branches, much preferring to do their banking online. Although some people use their browsers, the mobile banking app for smartphones and tablets is now the most popular tool. Around eighteen months ago ABN AMRO set up a new Digital Banking department. Bob Kern’s job as a Talent Acquisition Specialist is to hire new talent for Digital Banking.

Explosive growth of online

Bob talks about the high demand for digital specialists: ‘Banks are closing more and more brick-and-mortar branches, and online is growing explosively. Staff numbers aren’t rising fast enough yet to keep up, though. At the moment the Digital Banking department is made up of around 150 people. We badly need “digital natives”: people who grew up surrounded by modern-day technology. Programming is almost as natural to them as reading and writing. New hires are assigned to one of the multidisciplinary teams at e-commerce, business development or strategy.’

Time for a new image

Many digital specialists are more attracted to ‘trendier’ companies such as Bol.com and Coolblue, Bob explains. ‘ABN AMRO’s image isn’t that of a digital employer just yet, even though few companies are working as hard as we are on innovation and digitisation. More and more of our services are built on ICT, and this is set to continue during the coming years. You can see this at Digital Banking: the department’s growing rapidly. It’s full of young motivated people who are given plenty of scope and resources to work on the bank’s development and their own. We’re not looking for traditional bankers, we want a young generation who work because they enjoy what they’re doing – people who want to improve the bank and themselves, digital natives with the drive to get the most out of the technology and the guts to make the rest of the organisation enthusiastic.
