25,000 euros for Forgotten Child Foundation to build circular Hotel Heppie

News item -

On Wednesday, Pieter van Mierlo, our CEO of Private Banking, handed a cheque for 25,000 euros to Het Vergeten Kind (Forgotten Child Foundation) at the Circl pavilion. The Foundation will put the money towards building circular Hotel Heppie in the Dutch town of Almere.

The Foundation runs holiday camps for children from less than stable home environments. The success of its first Hotel Heppie at Mierlo has prompted it to plump for building a second one in Almere. Het Vergeten Kind aims to go fully circular in building this new hotel, with used and recyclable materials and products only.

Accelerate the sustainability shift

The Foundation’s aims are a very good fit with our new purpose: Banking for better, for generations to come. The construction of circular Hotel Heppie and the role we play in helping it to come about really put flesh on the bones of our refreshed strategy, i.e. accelerating the sustainability shift.

Koosje Ploegmakers, Relationship Director at Institutions & Charities, recalls that, when ABN AMRO received the loan application, the search was on for other ways to help. “Thanks to Relationship Manager Rob Peelen, we’ve managed to put the client in touch with various stakeholders of ours, the outcome of which are these great, innovative plans: a circular building to promote the social inclusion of children.”

Pieter van Mierlo observes: “It breaks your heart to hear the stories of the children Het Vergeten Kind goes out on a limb for. At the same time, I’m really pleased that our bank can use its knowledge and experience of circular building to make a contribution. Let’s hope this gets the ball rolling and that it gathers momentum rapidly.”

The Forgotten Child Foundation expects to buy land in 2019 and to welcome its first young visitors at the new Hotel Heppie in Almere in 2020.
