Starting today, clients of ABN AMRO and a number of other European banks will be able to enjoy superfast transfers between the participating banks. This system, known as ‘instant payments’, means it will take just a few seconds for money transferred from an account at one bank to arrive in the account of a client of one of the other banks. This makes ABN AMRO one of the first banks in Europe to introduce instant payments.

Over four in ten Dutch people admit they save but don’t know exactly why. The reason most often cited for building up a nest egg, though, is to ensure there are sufficient funds in the event of an emergency, according to a survey recently carried out by ABN AMRO on the savings habits of over 2,000 Dutch citizens. Nearly 16 per cent said they put money by to invest later in their home and household. The results of the survey also reveal that the Dutch rely on their savings accounts to go on holiday (8 per cent), repay their mortgage (5 per cent) and top up their pension.

Dutch people with a disposable income of at least €500,000 give an average of €7,915 per year to charities. Research conducted by ABN AMRO MeesPierson and Maastricht University found that wealthy people in paid employment donated the most (€12,992 on average), followed by entrepreneurs (€10,349). Those with inherited wealth gave by far the least (€2,802). As a percentage of their capital, wealthy employees also donated the most (0.5%) and heirs the least (0.1%).
