Access to reliable and affordable energy is key to our wellbeing and prosperity. Because ABN AMRO recognises that this also involves significant sustainability risks, our policy is aimed at responsible management of the environmental, social and ethical (ESE) risks and impacts of activities in the energy sector.

This is why the bank does not finance, amongst others, new coal-fired power plants and oil extraction from tar sands. We also assess clients and transactions by means of questionnaires, which rate the extent to which our clients have processes and policies in place to manage the ESE risks and impacts of their business.

In addition, we incorporated guidelines for dams in our energy sector policy. The guidelines are based on best practices of the International Hydropower Association and the World Commission on Dams. Our guidelines are aimed at achieving consistency with our commitment to the Equator Principles (PDF 117 KB).

For more information on our own energy management and how we are reducing our carbon footprint, please see our 'Declaration on Climate Change' (PDF 78 KB).
