The benefits of gender equality in the Netherlands

Have you ever wondered what the Netherlands would be like today if we had achieved gender equality back in 2010? To find out, ABN AMRO had SEO Amsterdam Economics conduct a simulation in November 2021. Looking at a period of 10 years, from 2010 to 2020, SEO Amsterdam Economics calculated the impact that having a gender-equal society would have on the Netherlands.

The simulation divided the total number of hours worked equally between men and women, completely eliminating the gender difference in hours worked. The report analyses what gender equality means on an individual level, on household level and for the Netherlands as a whole. The results are promising: a significant increase in the Netherlands’ gross domestic product (GDP) of several billions per year and greater financial independence for Dutch citizens, while maintaining the high quality of life.

The simulation clearly shows how much the Dutch economy is missing out on every year due to an unequal distribution of work, stressing why gender equality is urgently needed.
