‘First step’, a children’s book
Hi, dear reader and listener! Welcome to our dedicated page about a special book: First step – Real stories about first steps.
Did you know that for 1.6 million children in the Netherlands, activities like sports, arts, and culture are not a given? Unfortunately, not all children grow up having the same opportunities, but offering the right support can make a real difference. We at ABN AMRO have been committed to delivering positive, systemic change for years. That’s why for Children’s Book Week 2025, we and our partners are publishing First step: a children’s book featuring 15 inspiring, true stories from children and Dutch celebrities such as Jörgen Raymann, Edson da Graça and Sherida Spitse.
They share the moments when they decided: I’m beginning! I’m going to do what I love most. Written by author Malou de Roy van Zuydewijn and brought to life with vibrant illustrations by Saša Ostoja, their personal stories show how a bit of extra support can make a real difference.
First step isn’t just a book, it’s a reading and listening experience. The stories are available as an audiobook in Dutch – narrated by former 3FM DJ Sagid Carter – and as a printed version in Dutch, English, Turkish and Arabic. The special Reading and Listening Bookmark in the printed version allows you to place your telephone next to the illustrations and read the stories in your preferred language. This way, children, parents and guardians who don’t speak Dutch can enjoy the book together. This makes reading more accessible and brings everyone together.
