ABN AMRO Sustainable Impact Fund (SIF) and Aviva Investors have committed €100 million to SL Materials, formerly known as Urban Mine. This follow-on investment will enable the company to expand its production capacity, develop new sites and accelerate the scaling of its innovative circular concrete technology.
SL Materials enables high-value reuse of concrete from demolition projects in the production of new concrete. Using its proprietary Smart Liberator and Smart Refiner technologies, the company recovers cementitious materials, sand and gravel for reuse in circular concrete applications. In doing so, it helps reduce CO₂ emissions and improve resource efficiency in the construction sector.
The investment will support the expansion of the company’s existing site in Zaandam and the development of additional production capacity across new locations in Europe. It will also fund further innovation and optimisation of the technology. The investment coincides with the company’s rebranding, reflecting its next phase of growth and European expansion.
Maarten Blomme, Head of Corporate Investments at ABN AMRO: "We are convinced that circular concrete can become the industry standard. This follow-on investment will enable SL Materials to further scale its unique concrete recovery technology and make high-quality circular concrete available to a wider customer base. Financing innovative companies such as SL Materials is an important part of how ABN AMRO supports the transition to a more circular and resilient economy, and we are proud to support that ambition."
