Sustainability is a key element of ABN AMRO’s strategy. It has been the bank’s policy for some time now to limit global warming.

The bank’s existing climate policy, set out in our Climate Statement, is based on the Paris Climate Agreement. We have also signed the Dutch financial industry’s climate commitment and are developing a climate strategy based on the time lines in this document.

ABN AMRO is aware that the climate transition is in a state of flux and that the strategy it has embarked on must be regularly evaluated and, where necessary, reviewed. As described in the 2021 Integrated Annual Report, ABN AMRO supports the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (down from ‘well below 2 degrees’). Our climate strategy will be presented by the end of 2022 at the latest – and sooner if possible.

Our new climate strategy is the next step in the bank’s efforts – in conjunction with our clients – to combat climate change and accelerate the energy transition. The climate strategy will include targets for 2030 and 2050 (in line with the financial industry’s climate commitment), and we will set ourselves interim targets. We are convinced that our climate strategy will, in many respects, tally with the goals of our stakeholders, including those of Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth Netherlands), with whom we are in a continuous dialogue.
