The spark flew at the coffee machine. Diana Hoeve-van Eeden and her wife have now been a “bank couple” for more than 14 years. In the lead-up to Pride Amsterdam, we talk to Diana about her commitment to LGBTIQ+ inclusion at our subsidiary International Card Services (ICS). “The fact that I met her at work shows how important an open and safe working environment is.”

You have worked at ICS for more than 26 years. What motivates you to support LGBTIQ+ inclusion?

“Recently, I was looking for ways to organise something around Pride at ICS. After asking around, I discovered PRIDE+ at ABN AMRO. I signed up for the newsletter, attended a meeting and immediately felt welcome. I met colleagues who are committed to inclusion, and their enthusiasm was contagious. Looking back, I sometimes think I should have done this much sooner.”

And then you thought: it’s time to light that Pride spark at ICS too?

“Yes, I saw opportunities to give more attention to LGBTIQ+ topics within ICS. That is why I want to work together with PRIDE+ and help increase visibility. I have always felt safe at work and have never felt that I was treated differently because of my sexual orientation. However, the topic receives little visible attention in communication and activities.”

Why is visibility still important?

“If I look at the past decades, I see that a lot of progress has been made. At the same time, I notice that acceptance cannot be taken for granted. In some situations, it even seems to be under pressure. That is why we need to stay visible and keep the conversation going. It takes perseverance to keep drawing attention to this topic, but I believe it is important that we continue to do so.”

What message would you like to give to the next generation?

“Don’t give up and stay true to yourself. The generations before us worked hard for visibility and acceptance. We need to protect that progress. I also hope that we continue to invest in inclusion. Think of visible communication, activities and clear points of contact for colleagues who need support. Ultimately, you want everyone to feel seen and welcome. That is what inclusion means to me.”

And who knows, maybe you will meet the love of your life along the way too…

“Yes, at the office coffee machine in my case! I will never forget that moment. We have now been together for fourteen years and are married. The fact that I met Mieke at work shows how important an open and safe working environment is. Everyone should be able to be themselves without pretending to be someone else.”

At ABN AMRO, we believe that our differences make us stronger. That is why we work every day to create an inclusive working environment where everyone feels welcome, seen and valued. For us, Pride is not only a moment to be visible, but also a confirmation of what we stand for as a bank: an employer and bank for everyone.
