New annual record: 4.2 billion euros paid through Tikkie in 2021

The Tikkie payment app keeps on gaining popularity. In 2021, Tikkie reached the threshold of 100 million transactions, representing a total of over 4.2 billion euros worth of Tikkies and shattering the previous year’s record of 3.4 billion euros. This brings the total amount paid through Tikkie over the past five and a half years to over eleven billion euros. The value of the average Tikkie has also risen slightly: at 38.74 euros it’s up by over three euros compared to the previous year.
The busiest Tikkie days this year were Monday 28 June (with almost 471,000 Tikkie payments being made) and Friday 25 June (467,000). In that weekend, a lot of coronavirus restrictions in the Netherlands were eased and the Dutch national football team played their eighth European Championship cup final on 27 June. On average, 300,000 Tikkies are paid per day. Friday is the most popular Tikkie day: four of the five busiest Tikkie days in 2021 were Fridays. Tikkie payment requests are also still paid very fast: 65% are paid within an hour. Of that percentage, 37% are paid within five minutes and 20% within just one minute.
Increase in skating, decrease in carnival and winter sports
Tikkies are most often sent to settle up for food and groceries. These are the two most common descriptions via Tikkie. There are also some notable increases and decreases in descriptions used through Tikkie in 2021. The corona measures clearly have an impact on this. Striking decreases in 2021 compared to the previous year are the descriptions 'carnival' and 'winter sports'. In 2020, many people were able to go on winter sports just before the corona outbreak and carnival could also be celebrated at the last minute. Unfortunately, this was completely different a year later and these descriptions have largely disappeared in 2021. The cold spell in the Netherlands in February and the skating fun, brought a notable newcomer to the list of Tikkie descriptions. There was a run on (second hand) skates, so a lot of Tikkies were sent with the term 'skates'.
Business use Tikkie on the up
“In the early years, Tikkie focused mainly on payments between consumers. Now, though, it’s also widely used in business, with 20,000 companies using the Tikkie business functionality. This accounted for 400 million euros worth of transactions in 2020 – a growth of 70% compared to 2020. Our cashback proposition Tikkie Terug has also grown rapidly. This year, we carried out over 150,000 repayments to consumers,” says Moreno Kensmil, Tikkie’s Head of Marketing. "We are proud that Tikkie has shown a nice growth in the past year. We are already looking forward to 2022, where we will do even more for our users and customers."
