Threshold for negative interest down to 500,000 euros

- Products and services
From 1 January 2021, ABN AMRO clients in the Netherlands with total savings of more than 500,000 euros in their bank accounts will be paying 0.5% interest on the amount above this threshold. This will apply to both retail and business clients. The interest on deposits under 500,000 euros will remain unchanged, at 0%.
Interest rates
While the low interest rate environment is expected to continue for some time, we are seeing that savings are still on the rise. ABN AMRO pays interest on the excess cash it parks with the European Central Bank. The bank pays part of these costs itself; another part is passed on to clients.
Following the introduction of the 500,000-euro threshold, about 98% of the bank’s clients will be safeguarded from negative rates. A transitional arrangement will apply to ABN AMRO’s investment clients, in line with developments such as the recent changes in fees and rates.
