Digitalisation offers countless opportunities, but not everyone can easily keep up in this rapidly changing world. Research shows that 1 in 6 people in the Netherlands sometimes needs help with everyday banking tasks, like applying for a new debit card. For people with disabilities, the challenges are often even greater. That’s why ABN AMRO is organising the Accessible Banking Week this year, which kicks off with an inspiring opening event dedicated entirely to digital equality.
Rik Wouters: an inspiring story of resilience and digital inclusion
One of the speakers at the opening is Rik Wouters from Leiden. Wouters, who has a visual impairment, knows better than anyone how complicated it can be to navigate the digital world independently. During the event, he’ll share his personal experiences and practical tips. “Banking should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their disability,” says Wouters. “I see it as my mission to help others and raise awareness.”
In addition to his story, visitors can talk to other experts and people with firsthand experience. This makes the event not only educational but also interactive, with a focus on discovering new opportunities and solutions.
A festive opening
Marguerite Bérard and Medy van der Laan (chair of the Dutch Banking Association) will open the event, emphasising the importance of financial accessibility and discussing the role banks play in this effort.
Visitors will also have the chance to explore the Experience Square, where they can see for themselves the obstacles people with disabilities face. Additionally, they can join interactive sessions and speak with Gudy van der Wal, Director of Financial Accessibility at ABN AMRO. She will explain the steps ABN AMRO is taking to ensure that banking remains safe and accessible for everyone.
Building accessible banking together
ABN AMRO strives to be a bank for everyone. This event is a key step in our mission to make and keep our (digital) products and services accessible. Marguerite Bérard says: “Inclusion isn’t just a moral responsibility; it’s also an opportunity to build a better future together. Together, we hold the key to making banking accessible to everyone.”
