ABN AMRO is launching a six-month pilot with AI company Wonderful to explore how agentic AI can support colleagues in tackling financial crime and improving customer data processes. Led by Innovation, the pilot will take place in the bank's experimentation environment.

Unlike traditional AI tools that mainly answer questions or generate content, AI agents can use tools and information to perform a sequence of tasks. The pilot will explore whether agents can support activities such as gathering information, preparing case information and supporting data quality checks, while operating within clearly defined boundaries and under human oversight.

The pilot will focus on Detecting Financial Crime (DFC) and Customer Data Solutions (CDS), where information quality, consistency and traceability are essential. Working together with Wonderful, ABN AMRO aims to better understand where AI agents can add value and what is required to use them effectively in a banking environment.

‘AI's potential becomes tangible when we put it to work in real processes. With this pilot, we want to explore how agents can take on tasks and help our colleagues focus their time and expertise where they add the most value,’ says Yorick Naeff, Head of Innovation at ABN AMRO. ‘Our ambition is to take the next step in applying AI within the bank. That means deploying solutions, learning from how they perform and building a clear understanding of what it takes to use them responsibly and effectively.’

Alongside potential improvements in efficiency and quality, the bank will evaluate factors such as reliability, human oversight and how AI agents operate within existing processes and controls.
