First Results from ChatGPT Advertising Confirm AI’s Growing Role in the Financial Customer Journey Consumers are increasingly using AI to search for financial information, but also to compare options and prepare their decisions. The first results from ABN AMRO’s advertising pilot within ChatGPT confirm this trend. Through this pilot, ABN AMRO, as one of the first European banks, is exploring the role advertisements within AI assistants can play as a new touchpoint in consumers’ financial research and decision-making funnel.
The results from the first few weeks show that the campaign is generating immediate visibility and relevant website traffic. This indicates that AI platforms are evolving into a new channel where consumers explore financial options, compare alternatives and prepare their decisions, even before they visit the environment of a financial services provider.
Consumers’ financial research journey has changed dramatically over recent decades: from the bank branch to the internet and search engines, and now increasingly to AI assistants such as ChatGPT. Ada Jong, Head of Digital Sales & Engagement: “You can view this as an evolution in marketing. Where the First Moment of Truth once prevailed, and the Zero Moment of Truth was introduced 15 years ago, we have now arrived at the AI Moment of Truth. We anticipated this development some time ago and were waiting for the opportunities to become available in the Netherlands. Now that the moment has arrived, we are keen to gain our first experiences. Within the first 10 days, the campaigns had already generated concrete mortgage calculations and mortgage consultations. We are seeing engagement levels for business account opening significantly outperform those of social and display channels, and both Dutch and English-speaking new customers are finding us through these ads. This demonstrates AI’s potential as a channel for reach, engagement and traffic to our website, while we are also preparing for the moment when that final step may take place within AI itself.”
The value of the pilot lies not only in the results, but also in what they reveal about changing consumer behaviour. According to Ada Jong: “Part of the orientation and consideration phase is shifting to an environment outside our own channels. By experimenting now, we are gaining experience with the development of this environment and with ways of being meaningfully present through our products and services. For consumers and their agents alike.”
The pilot is intended to determine what role AI platforms can play within the marketing mix and how they contribute to reach, engagement and lead generation across different stages of the funnel. The initial signal is clear: consumers are increasingly discovering and comparing financial products through conversations with AI.
