Update from Dutch banks on cyberattacks
- Detecting Financial Crime
Banks are to discuss with consumer organisations and companies the effects of cyberattacks and what we can learn from them for the future. This is expected to take place early next week under the chairmanship of the Dutch central bank. Yesterday DDoS attacks again caused several short disruptions. The banks are aware of the frustration this causes their clients and are doing all they can to protect against these kinds of attacks. Cyberattacks are an issue of national importance requiring cooperation between all parties involved.
Phishing warning
Banks are aware of the concern and uncertainty the disruptions have caused. They see that criminals take advantage of this by trying to get people to reveal their bank login details bymeans of phishing emails and sometimes phone calls. Banks are warning their clients about this and advising them to ignore suspicious mails and calls. Banks need assistance from the police and judicial authorities to combat DDoS attacks. The Public Prosecution Service, in cooperation with the banks, is investigating who’s behind the recent cyberattacks. Given the nature of the Internet, combating DDoS attacks is an international issue. There is no indication of a connection between the recent cyberattacks on Dutch banks and those on American banks.
