ABN AMRO has been proclaimed this year’s winner of the fourth Okura Emma at Work Award 2016. This award is handed out in recognition of companies’ efforts to help workers with impairments find jobs. The award ceremony took place in Amsterdam’s Okura Hotel on Saturday, 11 June, where ABN AMRO became the first knowledge-intensive organisation to win this prize.
The ceremony and the award are organised by Emma at Work and Lions Noordwijk. Other nominees for the award were Unilever, Deen supermarkets, the Amsterdam city archives and Breiboerderij. Besides the award ceremony itself, the evening included a series of cabaret performances by Karin Bloemen, Freek de Jonge, Marjolijn van Kooten and Sven Romkes and ended with a party. Music was provided by former judo champion Dennis van der Geest and Alex Wegman.

It’s wonderful to be recognised by an organisation that does such important work. Who’d ever think to offer someone with autism a job in communications? Or someone who’s almost blind a role as a commercial adviser? Most employers wouldn’t, but ABN AMRO isn’t most employers. Hopefully other companies will draw inspiration from what we’re doing here and step up their efforts to hire more talented individuals in spite of any impairment.’
