By the end of this year, all retail customers with ABN AMRO payment accounts will be able to pay with contactless cards. At present, 2.3 million cards have already been replaced and another 2.4 million will follow before the end of the year. ABN AMRO is issuing the new cards as from today.

Gijs Schreuder, Retail payments director: ‘Contactless payments are becoming increasingly popular. Lately, the number of contactless payments has been doubling on a monthly basis. We are happy that all of our customers will be provided with cards enabling this quick, secure and easy method of payment this year.’

Contactless cards enable customers to pay amounts up to € 25 simply by touching their card on a contactless card reader. Entering a pin code is no longer necessary.

In July 2013, ABN AMRO was the first bank in the Netherlands to start issuing contactless cards. Meanwhile, well over 70,000 of the 300,000 payment terminals have been replaced by contactless card readers. Contactless payments are also possible in many other European countries, including Germany, Spain, France and Switzerland.
