Cross-sector policy

ABN AMRO has published bankwide statements on four key sustainability topics: human rights, climate change, animal welfare and biodiversity. These statements outline our approach and how we address sustainability-related issues in each area.

Please note that the statements below are currently being revised in light of our strategy update and will be republished in Q4 2026.

Human rights statement

ABN AMRO’S activities impact the lives of millions of people. We recognise that we ourselves or our business associates could contribute to or be connected to practices that raise human rights issues. The Human Rights Statement describes our commitment, our responsibility and our expectations of ourselves and our business associates with regard to respecting human rights. The statement also describes the main activities we carry out to fulfil our responsibility in the arena of human rights. The statement is based on international guidelines and conventions, including the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

Climate strategy

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing us today. In December 2015, 196 countries adopted the Paris Agreement: a commitment to keep the global rise in temperature well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and if possible to no more than 1.5°C. ABN AMRO fully acknowledges its responsibility in achieving this objective.

Our climate strategy is a plan of action presenting our principles, priorities and key levers. It sets out how we are aligning our portfolios with limiting global warming to a 1.5°C scenario and supporting the transition to a net zero economy by 2050.

Animal welfare statement

At ABN AMRO, we recognise that as a financial service provider we can be connected to adverse impacts on animal welfare through our business relations. We have therefore written an Animal Welfare Statement explaining our approach to animal welfare, with particular attention to the following themes:

  • wildlife and endangered species

  • animal testing and biotechnology

  • animals and entertainment

  • fur and wool

  • livestock farming and transportation

  • fishing

Nature statement

A biodiverse planet that supports a stable climate, clean air and water, healthy soil and thriving flora and fauna is crucial for human wellbeing and economic stability. Preserving nature is inherent to ABN AMRO’s purpose (Banking for better, for generations to come) and a shared responsibility with our stakeholders. Moreover, the financial health of our portfolio depends on ecosystem services such as pollination, carbon storage, water and air purification and protection against diseases.

ABN AMRO supports the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which provides guidance on which goals and targets societies should pursue in the coming years to halt and reverse biodiversity loss and put nature on a path to recovery.

The Nature Statement serves as high-level guidance for ABN AMRO's nature actions.
