Today, the Dutch dailies Het Financieele Dagblad (FD) and Trouw published articles on the custody and nominee services carried out by ABN AMRO subsidiary Martello for clients. The articles suggest that ABN AMRO uses these services to (possibly) facilitate tax evasion. This is untrue and ABN AMRO firmly denies this suggestion. ABN AMRO does not wish to facilitate tax evasion in any way. The services referred to in the articles are standard and regulated activities. These activities are performed in compliance with international and local laws and regulations, including the reporting requirements of the tax and other authorities.

Martello is a company that holds securities in custody for clients of the bank in Guernsey. The provision of custody services is a standard activity provided by many banks worldwide for clients with international investments. A nominee is the party appointed by the client to hold securities in custody and to conduct transactions and administration services on behalf of the client.
