ABN AMRO finances Housing Foundation ‘het Nieuwe Zandpad’

This week, the Dutch municipality of Utrecht announced their provisional award decision about a paid sex district in Utrecht. The Housing Foundation 'Het Nieuwe Zandpad' has been granted the provisional award.
Each profession is entitled to a safe workplace
ABN AMRO has filed a provisional bid to finance the foundation. The bank believes that sex workers, just like people in every other profession, deserve a safe workplace. This also reduces their vulnerability. The municipality and parties allied with the foundation are committed to giving them a controlled working environment, boosting the position and independence of sex workers.
Protecting vulnerable groups
Standing up for vulnerable groups in society is part of the bank's sustainability agenda. ABN AMRO therefore supports the municipality of Utrecht, the foundation and its allies (including social property developers Non Nobis) in their goal to create a safe workplace withoutexploitation. This will help sex workers move beyond illicit practices with criminal influences and greater risks. Most banks are reluctant to finance this sector because of the risks, but given the careful and solid approach of this project, ABN AMRO has decided to provide funding.
Profits to improve independence
The foundation will gain ownership of the property, and will be working with three carefully selected operators. As the foundation is a non-profit organisation, any excess profits that are generated will be used for activities that boost the independence of sex workers - such as debt counselling, psychological assistance and education.
