For ABN AMRO customers who have not debited outside of Europe in the past year, debit cards outside Europe will be 'turned off' as of January 20, 2013. Customers have the option of quickly and easily changing this themselves via Internet Banking or by telephone or via an office. From today on, customers will be informed by letter or bank mail. For most customers, pins outside of Europe are 'turned off' by default, but for about 10% of the customers who regularly use the pass outside of Europe, nothing changes.

ABN AMRO takes these additional measures on the one hand because customers have indicated that they would like to arrange the use of their payment products themselves and on the other hand to better protect customers against skimming fraud. With this form of payment card fraud, criminals with a copied payment card try to withdraw money outside of Europe. That is now less easy for them and with it a lot of damage and discomfort is prevented. Gijs Schreuder, Director of Private Payments, ABN AMRO: 'At the end of August, the bank already turned off the option for most customers to transfer money to foreign countries by default. This has contributed to a sharp decrease in the number of fraud cases. With the measure we are now taking for the payment card, we also expect to further reduce damage caused by skimming. The changes to internet banking and the debit card are part of a package of measures that ABN AMRO is introducing to better protect customers against fraud. ABN AMRO advises customers to take their own safety measures at all times. More information about this can be found on the bank 's website .
