Major statement for equality

News item -

We are making an unmistakeable statement about diversity and inclusion at this year’s Amsterdam Pride. The entrance to our main offices in Amsterdam is covered in rainbow colours and announces that we are ‘Proud to Support Equality’, while our Dam Square and Leidseplein branch offices stand out for their windows being covered with colourful notes sporting statements by our people about equality.

“ABN AMRO supports everything Pride Amsterdam is about,” Chair of the Gay Bankers Network Jan de Geus explains. “We’ve been working to create a workplace where everyone feels welcome and safe for years.” The bank does this through the Gay Bankers Network, for instance, and its Diversity & Inclusion policies. This year, we have mounted a large-scale, very visible Pride campaign to support the LGBTI+ community, which isn’t always accepted everywhere. Not even in the Netherlands.

Hundreds of employees in on the act

Nicole Böttger, Head of Diversity, says that her department “really wanted to make a statement. Something revealing about equality and inclusivity at ABN AMRO. And so, we asked our employees to tell us how they feel, asking them to help us make a statement by answering such questions as what workplace pride means to them.”

These employee statements feed into the campaign as we now see at various locations. As Nicole points out: “We’ve collected hundreds of written responses from across our entire network. A lot of the statements were positive and inspiring. But we also received responses that showed us where we need to improve. This is something we’re working on right now, because we believe that every employee at ABN AMRO deserves to feel included and treated equally.”

All these employee responses have been literally brought together on a welcome gate to our main offices, and on the windows of our Leidseplein and Dam Square branch offices. Visitors of our Foppingadreef and Gustav Mahlerplein offices are encouraged to share their views in the lobby, and we’d like to hear how you feel. Come and sit on our bench or tell us online at #workplacepride.
