ABN AMRO: Homeowners pleased with ownership

Press release -

Houses street

The majority of homeowners (83%) would opt for home ownership again if they were to move house now. Only 27% of renters, on the other hand, are looking to buy a home, and more than half (55%) would continue to rent if they were to move now. These are the results of ABN AMRO’s first Woonkamer Monitor survey.*

Homeowners would choose to buy again mainly because they are convinced that owning a home is a way to save for the future (59%). Around 15% see home ownership as an investment and a way to accumulate wealth. In addition, many people surveyed (46%) believe that buying is cheaper than renting. A relatively large group (43%) noted that being in charge of your own home is a reason to buy.

Buyer’s market

Today’s housing market is viewed as a buyer’s market. Two-thirds of the households (69%) surveyed think it is now a good time to buy a home. Around 85% of the households said that now would not be a good time to sell. Almost one-third of the respondents (31%) stated that confidence in the housing market has grown in the past six months.

Home comparison tool

ABN AMRO is today introducing the Huizenvergelijker, a home comparison tool (in Dutch only). This tool gives homeowners an indication of whether or not it is a good time to move house. It looks at how home prices in the neighbourhoods of the current and desired homes are developing, interest rate movements and how quickly homes in a given area are being sold.
