ABN AMRO expands Mission 2030 to include ambitious ‘Paris-proof’ standards

ABN AMRO yesterday announced it will enhance its bank-wide Mission 2030 to include the standards agreed in the Paris climate accord. In its 2030 mission, the bank set the goal to have its own buildings achieve at least energy label A by 2023 and to attain an average label A for the entire ABN AMRO-financed residential and commercial property portfolio by 2030. ABN AMRO now adds that its own buildings should be ‘Paris-proof’ by 2030.

Large companies join forces to address cyber threat

The cyber security departments of a number of large Dutch companies, including ABN AMRO, Ahold-Delhaize, Shell, IBM, ING and KPN, are teaming up to face down cyber threats. On 13, 14 and 15 May, ABN AMRO hosts the country’s first cybersecurity conference for large Dutch companies, SMEs and students. Minister of Justice and Security Ferdinand Grapperhaus will open the conference.

Schools in deprived neighbourhoods: 93% regularly see pupils with difficulties in the classroom

In the Netherlands, pupils at schools in deprived neighbourhoods have a significantly more difficult time than children attending schools in conventional neighbourhoods, with 93% of teachers regularly seeing children with problems at school. The corresponding figure in conventional neighbourhoods is 59%. Breaking down the problems into separate groups reveals an even more worrying picture. For example, 87% of teachers indicate that pupils in deprived neighbourhoods often have underdeveloped language skills, versus 23% in conventional neighbourhoods. For concentration difficulties, the breakdown is 72% versus 57%, and the difference in experiences with large numbers of pupils with learning deficiencies is a staggering 40% (70% as opposed to 30% in conventional neighbourhoods). These are findings from a study carried out by MWM2 for Jeugdeducatiefonds (Education Fund for Children), Stichting Kinderpostzegels Nederland (Dutch Children’s Charity Stamps Foundation) and ABN AMRO Foundation. Today the organisations present the results at a seminar entitled ‘Unequal Educational Opportunities’.

Eight out of ten Dutch home-owners expect to lock in gains when selling their homes

Eight out of ten Dutch home-owners expect to gain if they were to sell their homes today, with only one in ten believing they wouldn’t. The remainder were don’t knows. Owners of medium-priced homes are the most sanguine about the amount they think is involved. Well over 20% of owners of homes with purchase prices between EUR 200,000 and EUR 400,000 assume they stand to make between EUR 50,000 and EUR 100,000, with another 20% predicting gains in excess of EUR 100,000. These and other findings may be gleaned from a survey of 1,250 home-owners commissioned by ABN AMRO and carried out by market research agency Ipsos.

Today, ABN AMRO Bank N.V. announces its signing of an agreement with Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited (“Butterfield”) for the sale of ABN AMRO’s Channel Islands operations to Butterfield. The proposed transaction, which is still subject to regulatory approvals, is expected to close before the end of Q3 2019.

ABN AMRO bullish on IT and communications services sectors

ABN AMRO has become more bullish on information technology and communications services. The bank is advising investors to increase their equity holdings in both sectors – from neutral to overweight. At the same time, ABN AMRO is downgrading its recommendation for the consumer goods sector (from neutral to underweight), as it is for the energy sector (from overweight to neutral).

ABN AMRO: “Caution owing to trade dispute”

ABN AMRO continues to take a cautious approach to markets owing to rising economic risks, maintaining its neutral position in equities. The bank attributed its approach to uncertainty regarding the trade dispute between the United States and China, as well as other growing political risks. Bonds are still out of favour (underweight). Within commodities, gold is preferred (overweight).

Tikkie breaches five million user mark

Tikkie has just achieved a new milestone: over five million Dutch people now use the ABN AMRO payment service. Nearly 200,000 Tikkie reminders are paid every day – up to 350 a minute at peak times. Also, the number of business clients for Tikkie has doubled compared with the end of last year, meaning that consumers can increasingly pay businesses and not just each other. Tikkie aims to make payments easier, faster and more fun everywhere.

ABN AMRO Group Economics: “Housing market heating has peaked”

The Dutch housing market has moved past peak overheating, with ABN AMRO Group Economics’ latest Housing Market Monitor showing ever-increasing signals of cooling down. The bank’s economists point to less rapidly rising house prices and the persistent fall in the number of homes actually purchased – a confluence of trends corroborating their forecasts that house purchases will end this year 5% down. At the same time, Group Economics assumes that house prices will advance less rapidly than they have done recently. That said, the projected rise by 6% still outpaces the historic average by one percentage point.

ABN AMRO introduces Home Equity Mortgages for pensionable-age homeowners

ABN AMRO is pleased to announce the immediate introduction of the Home Equity Mortgage (Overwaarde Hypotheek). With this new mortgage product, homeowners who have reached state pension age (under the Dutch Algemene Ouderdomswet, or AOW) can cash out their equity without being forced to sell their homes. Unlike a normal mortgage increase, a Home Equity Mortgage does not mean higher monthly costs: the interest is simply added to the mortgage debt over the lifetime of the mortgage. Clients decide for themselves how they want to use the equity that they have cashed out.

ABN AMRO has announced that Gert-Jan Meppelink will step down as a member of the Executive Committee on 1 August 2019. He is responsible for HR, Transformation & Communications (HTC) within the bank. Gert-Jan Meppelink will step down by mutual agreement in response to the proposed decision to regroup the HTC portfolio in light of ABN AMRO’s strategy.
