Sustainability

Transitioning to a sustainable society together with our clients – that’s what we are working towards. We offer clients specific expertise that we are embedding in our products and services.

To limit global warming in line with the Paris Agreement, society must reduce its carbon emissions now to achieve a net-zero economy. We acknowledge that our activities contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, mainly through the financing we provide. We undertake various initiatives to reduce our negative impact.

Climate action

As a bank, we can make the biggest impact by supporting our clients in becoming more sustainable. Whether it is through enabling homeowners to upgrade their energy-efficiency labels or helping businesses adopt more efficient processes, we aim to facilitate the necessary emission reduction initiatives. Supporting our clients’ emissions targets helps us move closer to our own long-term ambition: net-zero emissions by 2050.

Climate strategy

Our climate strategy presents our principles, priorities and key levers. It sets out how we are aligning our portfolios to support the transition to a net zero economy by 2050.

ABN AMRO has set emissions reduction targets for carbon-intensive sectors that are material and significant to our organisation. We have set targets and ambitions across our lending portfolios, operational activities and client asset portfolios, with a focus on responsibly reducing carbon intensity.

We use three decarbonisation levers to implement specific actions aimed at achieving climate targets for each sector:

  • We engage with clients and offer financing solutions to support their transition to net-zero emissions.

  • We ensure our processes and policies are aligned with net-zero emission targets, enabling us to assess risks and challenges to meeting reduction targets and the broader climate transition.

  • We engage with industry and governments to raise awareness and promote sector-wide change.

In November 2025, we announced our intention to update our climate strategy to align with a pathway of limiting global warming well-below 2°C relative to pre-industrial
