Digital platforms are taking over more and more markets. Think of Uber for taxis and Airbnb for accommodation. We're increasingly seeing this 'platformification' in financial services, too: supply and demand come together without traditional intermediaries. This trend offers many opportunities for banks. For example, we can bring promising ideas for new businesses to market and improve client experiences. That's why we work closely with platform companies and start-ups to learn more about platformification together.

Platformification in the financial world

Major tech companies now all have their own payment platform: Google Pay, Facebook Pay and Apple Pay. These have grown rapidly since the introduction of PSD2. This is a European regulation stating that consumers can share their account details with companies that aren't banks. This allows these organizations to develop and offer financial services. ABN AMRO is the first major Dutch bank to set up a Developer Portal. Through that, we want to work together with other companies to come up with innovative ideas.

Platformification is the future. That's why we're developing new platforms or collaborating with existing ones.

We keep coming up with new platforms, like 'Pay Later' . This allows companies that buy and sell online to pay easily, safely and quickly online through invoices. Sellers get paid immediately after shipping and the buyer has 30 days to pay. This way, 'Pay Later' creates trust in online purchases between businesses.
